Why choose Oracle?

As an application development professional, my career aims at doing work that is fulfilling in the sense that it challenges my abilities, keeps me on the cutting edge of technology, and pays me decently. I’ve established my career as an Oracle application developer over the past two decades, and I can’t see myself doing anything else. Having worked with a few other technologies over the years, I can confidently say that Oracle is at the top as far as meeting my career goals is concerned. The purpose of this paper was to inspire a growing generation of IT professionals by highlighting some of the application development roles that I love and how they are supported by Oracle technologies.

As with any business, the tools available to get the job done are as essential as the knowledge and experience needed to do it efficiently and effectively. Fundamentally, it is important to have a solid foundational knowledge of software and how specific tools help in implementing a software solution. At the core of an Oracle, application is a relational database where data is logically organized into tables, and tables are interconnected through primary and foreign key relationships to form a system. There are various development roles that one can perform in the world of Oracle; Database Development, User Interface Development, Application Interface Development, Cloud Applications, and Business Intelligence Development.

Oracle’s greatest strength is that it comes with an integrated set of development tools that support any development approach, any technology platform, and any operating system. Oracle development tools range from traditional database management tools, Java-based mid-level development tools, to contemporary frameworks and platforms running sophisticated cloud applications and architectures. These tools are being used to build and deliver intelligent, state-of-the-art solutions that manage application data hosted by Oracle Database.

In my last two decades in the industry, I have seen the evolution of Oracle technologies with the tools available for developing applications, and I understand how important it is for anyone to keep their skills updated, to stay relevant in the industry. What has been important to me is that once I’ve got core technical development skills, it’s easy to upgrade as long as I understand trending technologies and how Oracle incorporates them into their products.

As an Oracle Application Developer, my job involves developing and maintaining routines that create and maintain data in a database, and present the data in such a way that it is operational for its intended purposes. I have developed extensions for Oracle’s out-of-the-box application functionality, bespoke applications, and interfaces that connect Oracle applications to other external applications. Oracle also provides SOA-like technologies and tools that facilitate interconnection with applications based on any technology. Creating and maintaining a real-life application end to end requires various skills and techniques and the beauty of Oracle is that it integrates with proprietary tools relevant to each phase of an application’s life cycle.

The figure below is a simple example of the architecture of Oracle-based system applications. It represents the database tier, mid-tier, and interface tier where information flows between the Oracle database and end-users, other applications, or other databases.

There is development work to be done at each level of the application architecture shown above, and Oracle provides the tools and technologies needed to develop a complete system. It is not necessary to be an expert in all technologies, but it will be necessary to understand how they interact with each other to build a seamless system. Oracle tools also fulfill non-technical tasks that are equally essential in software development or maintaining production systems. The following are some of the roles I am involved in and how Oracle Tools help meet job objectives.

Data modeling

Requirement analysis and solution design are important steps for any software solution as they ensure that the product to be developed meets its functional or non-functional requirements. Data modeling is a technique used in database applications to specific business requirements which will then be translated into software requirements for coding purposes. Data modeling may begin as a communication tool in the exploration of system requirements with stakeholders during the business analysis phase. In this phase, the data model is done at a higher level as appropriate to visualize the requirements and explore the domain concepts.

For the purposes of systems design, a data model represents the data structures that hold application data and how they are interconnected to form the system. Data modeling at this level is particularly important for the purpose of ensuring that the system’s data requirements are accurately interpreted and that the characteristics of each data entity are fully specified. A developer’s data model is a refinement of the business analysis data model, containing details of the actual data to be captured by the system which is then translated into a database.

Oracle SQL Developer comes integrated with Data Modeler, a graphical tool for building data models that increases productivity and simplifies database creation. The Data Modeler also generates the SQL code that is needed to create the database tables represented by the Data Model. Database developers can use this tool to contextualize the application data requirement and design the required database. More importantly, the data modeler can import and export from a variety of sources and targets provides various formatting options, and validates the model through a predefined set of design rules.

Database development and management

All operations on data in Oracle database applications are performed using Structured Query Language (SQL) statements. By building database objects, you use Data Definition Language (DDL) code to manage data using Data Manipulation Language (DML) queries. SQL is the ANSI standard language for any relational database. Where DDL statements enable you to create and change the structure of the database, DML statements enable you to query and change the content.

Oracle has its own version of SQL, Oracle SQL, which is an implementation of the ANSI standard that goes beyond the standard SQL features. Oracle SQL has evolved with the development of Oracle database technology, providing features for using state-of-the-art database technology. It also covers the use of functions that would only be possible with a procedural language, for example, the decode construct emulating the IF THEN ELSE logic. It goes without saying that to take full advantage of Oracle SQL features, one needs to know the features that are available for their database version and this information is usually available with the database version release note.

Oracle cursors are another powerful feature of Oracle SQL that allows users to manipulate multiple rows in a row-to-row manner. With cursors, Oracle creates a memory area, known as a reference area, to process SQL statements. A cursor can be explicitly named and defined for DML queries that return multiple rows or explicitly defined for single-row queries. The reference area contains all the information necessary to process the statement; For example, the number of rows retrieved, etc.

In real-life operations, it is common that the details of the SQL statement to be executed are not known until run time, for example where the exact details are driven by user input or processing being performed by a program. Oracle SQL supports the creation and execution of dynamic queries. This feature allows developers to develop flexible queries and cursors whose entire context is determined dynamically at run time.

Virtual Private Database (VPD) is a powerful Oracle database security feature that implements data security at the table row and column level. VPD is useful when security protections such as privileges and roles are not sufficiently fine-tuned. For example, you can allow all users to access the same employee’s table but create a security policy to restrict access to employees in the same department as the user. Essentially, the database adds a dynamic WHERE clause to the SQL statement issued against the table, view, or synonym for which the Oracle VPD security policy was applied. The WHERE clause allows only users whose credentials pass the security policy to access protected data.

The query optimizer is another feature of Oracle SQL that is really useful, especially for performance management. All Oracle SQL statements use the optimizer to determine the most efficient means of accessing the specified data. The optimizer uses aggregated database data for the system and available access paths to determine the most cost-effective execution plan. Oracle SQL Developer can influence the default execution plan generated by the optimizer through the use of hints, changing the optimizer target, or refreshing the database’s statistics.

Application development

SQL is a non-procedural language, which specifies which data operations are to be performed, but cannot handle logical operations or how operations are to be performed. This leaves SQL inadequate when it comes to developing applications that implement real-life business logic. This calls for the need for procedural program languages that implement control structures, such as loops or conditional branches, which are not available in SQL and are used to create procedures and functions.

With Oracle, procedures and functions can be developed and stored within the database. This is known as server-side programming, and the main advantage of this approach is that stored procedures, functions, and triggers can be implemented from anywhere. Additionally, server-side subprograms increase scalability by centralizing application processing on the server; It enables clients to reuse code. In addition, since the subprograms already reside in the database, context switching and network traffic are reduced; Therefore, calls are quick and efficient.

Oracle comes with its proprietary procedural language, PL/SQL, for creating server-side programs that are stored on a database in compiled form, making them more readily available to be executed at run time. PL/SQL is a procedural extension of SQL that integrates with databases, supporting all Oracle SQL statements, functions, and data types. Oracle Database also provides support for the development, compilation, storage, and deployment of Java programs. Java stored programs run on the database and are independent of the programs that run in the middle tier. They interface with SQL using the same execution model as PL/SQL. This integration with such powerful application development tools gives Oracle a competitive edge over other relational databases.

Application maintenance

Most of my work as an application developer is maintaining Oracle applications that are already in use. Maintenance tasks range from creating extensions to existing functionality, modifying existing functionality to meet changing business requirements, fixing bugs, and performing tuning of slow-running programs. Performance tuning is always challenging as many issues can result from poor program design to insufficient system resources. Even with the use of the most sophisticated development tools, system performance deteriorates if system resources are exhausted or poorly managed. In such a scenario, the problem can be rectified only by increasing the required resources. Otherwise, performance will be required to tune the underlying programs and queries.

Oracle comes with SQL Developer sessions and SQL monitoring tools that can help in system performance, identify the culprits, which can be targeted for fixing. The execution plan showing the path chosen by the optimizer also helps to identify areas of concern within the SQL query. This information can be used to tune SQL for better performance and can also inform whether database creation such as indexes is needed to speed up execution.

Knowing what needs to be done in application development is one thing, but it is very satisfying to have the tools to do the job more efficiently. Working with Oracle technologies is a journey of continuous learning and development. There is so much to learn, with each task to complete. Undoubtedly, to be successful as an IT professional one must have good foundational knowledge, and develop a systematic approach to problem-solving, which comes with experience. It is equally important to know the tools available and make the most of the features offered by the tool. Oracle has developed a set of development tools that are geared towards making the development of applications more efficient. Oracle technologies have also matured such that there is a mature knowledge base and online user community where answers to most technical questions can be found. There is a lot that you can do as a technical career in the Oracle field. Therefore we have given the list of Top 5 Oracle/SQL Training Institutes in Chandigarh. You can choose any of these above-given institutes in Chandigarh.
