Oracle also provides SOA-like technologies and tools that facilitate interconnection with applications based on any technology. Creating and maintaining a real-life application end to end requires various skills and techniques and the beauty of Oracle is that it integrates with proprietary tools relevant to each phase of an application’s life cycle.
The figure below is a simple example of the architecture of Oracle-based system applications. It represents the database tier, mid-tier, and interface tier where information flows between the Oracle database and end-users, other applications, or other databases.
There is development work to be done at each level of the application architecture shown above, and Oracle provides the tools and technologies needed to develop a complete system. It is not necessary to be an expert in all technologies, but it will be necessary to understand how they interact with each other to build a seamless system. Oracle tools also fulfill non-technical tasks that are equally essential in software development or maintaining production systems. The following are some of the roles I am involved in and how Oracle Tools help meet job objectives.
Requirement analysis and solution design are important steps for any software solution as they ensure that the product to be developed meets its functional or non-functional requirements. Data modeling is a technique used in database applications to specific business requirements which will then be translated into software requirements for coding purposes. Data modeling may begin as a communication tool in the exploration of system requirements with stakeholders during the business analysis phase. In this phase, the data model is done at a higher level as appropriate to visualize the requirements and explore the domain concepts.
For the purposes of systems design, a data model represents the data structures that hold application data and how they are interconnected to form the system. Data modeling at this level is particularly important for the purpose of ensuring that the system’s data requirements are accurately interpreted and that the characteristics of each data entity are fully specified. A developer’s data model is a refinement of the business analysis data model, containing details of the actual data to be captured by the system which is then translated into a database.

In real-life operations, it is common that the details of the SQL statement to be executed are not known until run time, for example where the exact details are driven by user input or processing being performed by a program. Oracle SQL supports the creation and execution of dynamic queries. This feature allows developers to develop flexible queries and cursors whose entire context is determined dynamically at run time.
Virtual Private Database (VPD) is a powerful Oracle database security feature that implements data security at the table row and column level. VPD is useful when security protections such as privileges and roles are not sufficiently fine-tuned. For example, you can allow all users to access the same employee’s table but create a security policy to restrict access to employees in the same department as the user. Essentially, the database adds a dynamic WHERE clause to the SQL statement issued against the table, view, or synonym for which the Oracle VPD security policy was applied. The WHERE clause allows only users whose credentials pass the security policy to access protected data.
The query optimizer is another feature of Oracle SQL that is really useful, especially for performance management. All Oracle SQL statements use the optimizer to determine the most efficient means of accessing the specified data. The optimizer uses aggregated database data for the system and available access paths to determine the most cost-effective execution plan. Oracle SQL Developer can influence the default execution plan generated by the optimizer through the use of hints, changing the optimizer target, or refreshing the database’s statistics.
SQL is a non-procedural language, which specifies which data operations are to be performed, but cannot handle logical operations or how operations are to be performed. Oracle comes with its proprietary procedural language, PL/SQL, for creating server-side programs that are stored on a database in compiled form, making them more readily available to be executed at run time.
